Annual Reports released for TGI and DEC for 2022-2023

Tufts Gordon Institute and the Derby Entrepreneurship Center at Tufts are proud to announce our 2023 Annual Reports. These  reports highlight the growth of our academic and co-curricular offerings at Tufts, the successes of our entrepreneurial students and alumni at Tufts, and DEC’s dedicated faculty and staff who are eager to help students on their entrepreneurial journey.

 

We look forward to continuing to build upon this momentum in 2024, and empower entrepreneurial leaders with profound purpose!

New Faculty Highlight!

DEC welcomes three new lecturers for Spring 2024! 

  • Betsy Goodrich will be teaching ENT100 Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurial Thinking. Betsy is the Co-Owner and VP Design of Manta Design, a product design consultancy with over 25 years of design leadership developing successful products in the healthcare, consumer and robotics markets. 
  • Amir Alexander Hasson will be co-teaching ENT141 Innovative Social Enterprises. Amir is a serial entrepreneur with experience developing profitable digital businesses internationally. He is passionate about innovating and implementing scalable solutions that address systemic environmental and social problems.
  • Kendall Reiss is a Professor of Practice in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and will be teaching a new course: ENT159 Art Entrepreneurship. In her work, Kendall focuses on the design and fabrication of contemporary jewelry alongside material experiments, which result in sculptural objects and time-based installations.  She is also the team lead for a Tufts Springboard Research & Scholarship Program Award with her work on BIPOC history.

Tufts $100k New Ventures Competition: Applications Open Feb 1!

The $100k New Ventures Competition is the flagship venture competition at Tufts. Early stage innovators and entrepreneurs pitch their ideas in three tracks: General, Social Impact, and Healthcare & Life Science. We welcome applicants across the Tufts community: Undergraduate and graduate students, recent alumni, faculty and staff across all 11 schools and colleges at Tufts. The competition culminates in live pitch competitions at the virtual semi-finals and finals. 

 

In early February, we are hosting infosessions on Medford, Boston, and Grafton campuses and also hosting a Pitch To Match event to help students form teams. Join one of the events and get involved!

"An Entrepreneur's Journey on the Road Less Travelled": A Keynote Address featuring renowned shoe designer and entrepreneur, Stuart Weitzman 

Stuart Weitzman has a passion for connecting with young people and passing along the message that business success and creativity are not mutually exclusive. Join the Tufts community on February 22 to hear about Stuart’s own personal journey to entrepreneurial success. Pizza will be served!

 

This event is led by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with Derby Entrepreneurship Center at Tufts.

Engineering Events at DEC and School of Engineering

Engineers Week is one of the biggest STEM events in the US, and at Tufts, that translates into EWeek. We are partnering with the School of Engineering again to run two events:

  • The First Year Engineering Design Challenge (for First Year engineering students)
  •  A Two-Part 3D Printing Workshop For Beginners Workshop (for all Arts, Science and Engineering students)

Calling Entrepreneurial Alumni: Post an internship job for undergraduate students! 

The Entrepreneurial Internship Program welcomes alumni-run companies who fit criteria to post entrepreneurial internship jobs for our undergraduate students. We collaborate with Tufts Career Center to offer a limited number of $4,500 grants to students who are accepted into otherwise unpaid summer internships. Post a job for a chance to welcome a gifted Tufts student to join you for the summer!

Ben Carson Jr., A07, secured $302M for Fvlcrum Funds  

FVLCRUM Funds, co-founded by Jumbopreneur and DEC board member, Benjamin Carson, Jr., A07, recently secured over $302 million for community impact private equity fund. FVLCRUM Funds is a private equity firm with a focus on investing capital at scale to address the U.S. racial wealth gap. Learn more about FVLCRUM Funds and Ben's inspiring story below.

The MassCyberCenter created the Cybersecurity Mentorship Program pairing diverse undergraduate students with a passion for cybersecurity with mentors in the industry. Applications are being accepted until February 19, 2024. Diverse undergraduate students, including those who are Black, Latinx and women, with a passion for cybersecurity are encouraged to apply.
